The law prohibits the teaching of any classes that promote “the overthrow of the United States government,” “resentment toward a race or class of people,” “are designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group” or “advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.”
Definitely wanted to post my thoughts on this one...to the point.
Ethnic studies brings about offense behavior towards the government, really? How does a class on learning about other cultures relay to over throwing the government? Is that those who are in power are afraid of people gaining the truth of history of the United States overthrowing governments less powerful than them. Do we need to mention Guatemala, Chile, ect.?
I remember back in high school (late 90's early 2000's) still learning the same ole history and knowing little about my own or any ones else culture except for Europe (mainly British) and US history. If we, the United States of America, claim to be such a diverse country that is open to other cultures, why are we sending the message that learning about another culture mean you are dishonoring your country?
If you travel anywhere else outside of the U.S, the most common language used other than the language of the native country, is English. Yet most of us north Americans do not even want to take the time to learning and master another country's language.
So as far as resent towards another class of people, I ask what message are we sending then by removing ethnic study courses from a curriculum???
